Serra Heck, a real estate professional and single mother of four, proudly announces her 2020 candidacy for State Representative in the 30th Legislative District. Heck is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican incumbent Lori Mizgorski in the General Election on Nov. 3, 2020. The Primary Election is April 28, 2020.

“The 30th District deserves a legislator who understands the needs of everyday people,” Heck said. “As a single mother, I work multiple jobs to live in this community and create opportunities for my children, and I will take that tireless work ethic into a State Legislature that is in desperate need of a positive voice for our communities.”

Heck, 43, is currently an account executive at a home warranty company and also works locally in sales. She currently serves on the Parent Teacher Guild at Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy in Aspinwall, through which she works with the Good Shepherd’s Day Shelter, Play It Forward Pittsburgh, Spark of Hope, and local food banks. She and her family currently reside in O’Hara Township.

Heck’s life experiences are the driving force behind her decision to seek public office. She went without health insurance for over a year because she made too much to qualify for government assistance but not enough to afford adequate healthcare. “Anyone who gets up and goes to work every day to support their family should not have to worry about basic needs like healthcare,” Serra remembers. “Instead of billions of dollars in tax breaks for large corporations, we should be finding ways to support one another to make sure no one gets left behind.”

She also cites the struggle of coping with a family member addicted to opioids as a life-changing experience. “Unfortunately, I know the devastation addiction can cause in a family. Opioid abuse is a community-wide epidemic, and we needed to learn to speak freely regarding this crisis because exposure is inevitable in the current environment,” Heck said. “I want our district to become more actively involved in embracing existing state programs and resources to create awareness and provide compassion and real help to families struggling with the living hell of opioid addiction every day. We must reassure families that they can reach out for help and support without feeling threatened or embarrassed.”

Heck sees herself as a symbol of a middle class in dire need of a champion. “I hope to change the perception that there are only very rich people or very poor people in the 30th District,” she said. “My experiences taught me that there are a lot of hard-working people in between who require a voice in Harrisburg, which is why we need a legislator who speaks for everyone, not just well-connected political insiders who buy access through campaign donations.”

“Our community is changing, with many new factors in our district contributing to this new dynamic. As a real estate professional, I see it with my own eyes every day. It is time for our leadership to evolve to meet these challenges positively and proactively. I know I have the real-world and professional experience, the work ethic, and the positive energy necessary to serve as a voice for everyone in our community”.

The 30th Legislative District includes Fox Chapel Borough, Hampton Township, Richland Township, and portions of O’Hara and Shaler townships.
