Shaler police are warning residents about scammers posing as representatives from Amazon trying to collect payments.
Police say several residents reported receiving calls and “official looking” emails asking them to make a payment to Amazon by buying eBay and Target gift cards and then providing them with the numbers, police said.
Authorities say the scams are well rehearsed and appear to be legitimate, but warn that no legitimate process for collecting payment involves purchasing gift cards.
The police department’s police blotter for the week of Feb. 2 includes four fraud reports that are being investigated by police.
