“We Build, We Fight” has been the motto of the U. S. Navy’s Construction Force, known as the “Seabees,” for more than 75 years. Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Porter, a 2017 Shaler Area High School graduate and native of Etna, builds and fights around the world as a member of this naval construction battalion center located in Gulfport, Miss.

Porter is serving as a Navy construction mechanic who is responsible for maintaining construction equipment.

“Basically, I’m a diesel mechanic for the Navy,” said Porter.

Porter credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons he learned growing up.

“I learned to respect leadership growing up in Etna, which is also important in the Navy,” said Porter.

While there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Porter is most proud of his humanitarian deployment to Tinian, a small island in the Pacific Ocean near Guam.

“We provided humanitarian assistance to local people following a typhoon,” said Porter.

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Porter and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes.

“Serving in the Navy is something that I can eventually look back on and be proud of,” said Porter.
