Duck race in Shaler an unusual fundraising opportunity

The Tom Rogers Memorial Duck Race was held July 13.

Sponsored by the Elfinwild Lions Club and held at Fawcett Fields in Shaler, the race in Little Pine Creek included rubber ducks with names like Moby Quack, Duckleberry Finn and Quack Reacher.

The race was named after Rogers because the duck race was an idea he brought to the Elfinwild Lions Club as a potential fundraiser. He died shortly after sharing the idea.

Participants took part by buying a chance on a duck for $5 and then watching as a bucket of yellow rubber ducks were dropped into the creek and began their race downstream. The top three finishers won cash prizes. Money that was raised is to be used for charities the club assists.
